A call that would exceed your balance returns 402 insufficient_credits and is never charged. On a paid plan, once your monthly allowance is spent the overage rate for your tier applies (from $0.95 down to $0.70 per 1,000 credits), billed with your next invoice. Enable auto top-up to refill automatically when you drop below a threshold.

A subscription commits you to a monthly volume, so the included credits are discounted against the $1 = 1,000 credits pay-as-you-go rate — around 25% on Starter and up to 34% on Scale. Packs stay available on every plan when you need a one-off boost.
